Carrageenan

AllowedReviewed September 18, 2026

Irish Moss · Carrageenan Gum

A seaweed-derived thickener, used in food and cosmetics alike.

What it does
Thickeners & film
Our take
Topically it's a texture ingredient with no benefit worth defending, and it's on the pore-clogging lists. The separate food-safety argument about degraded carrageenan and gut inflammation isn't our lane, but it's why you'll see it flagged elsewhere.
Can it clog pores
High. We flag it for anyone whose skin congests easily. This flag is for the face only, it does not apply to body, hair or home care.
