Fluoride

Depends on doseReviewed September 18, 2026

Sodium Fluoride · Stannous Fluoride · Monofluorophosphate

The active in most toothpaste, and the most studied cavity-prevention agent there is.

Our take
We're going to break from the wellness consensus here. The cavity-prevention evidence for topical fluoride is strong and the ADA position is well supported. The real risk, dental fluorosis, comes from swallowing it during tooth development, which is a supervision question for small children rather than an argument against the ingredient. We stock hydroxyapatite toothpaste because it's a genuinely good alternative with real remineralisation data, not because fluoride is dangerous.
