Lanolin and derivatives

AllowedReviewed September 18, 2026

Lanolin · Wool Fat · Wool Wax · Acetylated Lanolin Alcohol · Lanolin Alcohol · Ethoxylated Lanolin · Solulan

Wool grease, a heavy occlusive long used for cracked lips and nipples.

What it does
Emollient & barrier
Our take
Effective and, in pure medical-grade form, defensible. The ethoxylated versions fail our standard outright, the rest are strongly comedogenic on the face, and lanolin is a common contact allergen. We stock lanolin-free alternatives in every category where it usually appears.
Suitable from
Middle aged, 40+
Best for
Barrier repair · Aging & firmness
Skin types
Dry
Can it clog pores
High. We flag it for anyone whose skin congests easily. This flag is for the face only, it does not apply to body, hair or home care.

What we read

  • Comedogenicity literature; ACDS · reviewed Sep 2026
