Olive Oil

AllowedReviewed September 18, 2026

Olea Europaea Fruit Oil · Olive Butter

A heavy, oleic-dominant oil, the cooking oil, used cosmetically for millennia.

What it does
Emollient & barrier
Our take
Studies on infant skin found olive oil measurably weakened barrier function where sunflower oil supported it, which is a useful corrective to the idea that older equals gentler. Fine on body; not our pick for a face that breaks out. Note that olive-derived squalane and cetearyl olivate behave completely differently and are not flagged.
Suitable from
Young adult, 20+ · Middle aged, 40+
Best for
Barrier repair · Dryness & hydration · Aging & firmness
Skin types
Dry
Can it clog pores
Moderate. Some people on blemish-prone skin react to it. This flag is for the face only, it does not apply to body, hair or home care.
