More sun than you think.

what's actually happening

Most outdoor sport is sun exposure that doesn't feel like sun exposure. You were playing, or riding, or running, and you weren't thinking about it. It adds up week over week in the same places. Nose, cheekbones, the back of your neck, the t

Which makes SPF the product you'll get through most of — and sport formulas the ones you'll naturally reach for. Those are built to survive sweat, which usually means more film-formers, more alcohol, and fragrance to cover the smell of both. Same skin, four times a week, all season. Read the back. Mineral filters — zinc, titanium — sit on skin rather than absorbing into it.

Then there's whatever's strapped to you. A helmet, a headband, a chinstrap, a pack. Sweat under a strap for two hours doesn't go anywhere, and the liner inside a helmet gets damp and almost never gets washed. If it's shared, that's a second thing.

Friction shows up in a line rather than all over. If you're going to use a glide, use one with clean ingredients.

things worth doing

  • Reapply at halftime. It's the only break you're going to get.

  • Wash your helmet liner. Most of them come out.

  • Keep it in the bag, not at home. The SPF you have with you is the one that works.

things you can stop

  • Wiping your face with your shirt. Everything on the shirt is now on your face.

  • Skipping SPF on short sessions and cloudy days.

  • Putting a helmet back on a damp liner all season without ever cleaning it.
