what's actually happening
The shower is where most of it happens, and nobody talks about it.
Body wash is where sulfates live. They're what makes the foam, and the foam is why you like it — but they lift oil off skin the same way they lift it off a pan. You use far more body wash than face wash, across far more skin, and almost nobody reads that bottle.
Fragrance is heaviest here too, for the obvious reason: it's the part you notice. For most of that aisle it is the product.
Chest, back and shoulders break out too. Straps, backpacks, a wet swimsuit, conditioner running down your back — all of it plays a part.
It isn't a hygiene problem. Washing harder, with the thing that started it, makes it worse.

things worth doing
-
Turn the water down a notch. Hot water does most of the stripping.
-
Rinse your back last, after the conditioner is out.
-
Moisturize in the bathroom, while you're still damp. It works better and takes less.
things you can stop
-
Scrubbing. It irritates skin and it doesn't do what you were told it does.
-
Staying in a wet swimsuit or sweaty gear.
-
Using body wash on your face. Different skin, different job.
